The unique artistry of singer/songwriter John Tibbs sets him apart from many in today’s mainstream contemporary Christian music scene. Following the success of his album Dead Man Walking, the Heartland EP further cements John’s style and genre blending sound.

“Won’t Let Me Go” declares the promise that God won’t leave us in the middle of the hardships we face and will give us courage to stand tall. One of the lyrics that stuck out to me is “hope’s been blowing on this flame”. It brings to mind the process of starting a campfire with a small bit of kindling and tiny spark that must be given just enough oxygen to catch and start a blaze. Similarly, the smallest breath of hope can be enough to set our hearts on fire with the boldness to step out in faith and withstand the attacks that try to tear us down.

“Heartland” describes finding comfort in the shelter of the Savior. When the world weighs us down, we can find peace and a place that feels like home in the arms of His embrace.

“Midwest Magic” plays as a love letter to a significant other as it portrays a caring, encouraging and loyal relationship built upon faith, just as God intended love to be.

“Shepherd” draws inspiration from Psalm 23 praising the faithfulness of our Heavenly Father as He gently leads, corrects and loves us through the valleys and dark nights we face throughout life.

The EP also includes three acoustic Living Room Sessions versions of “Won’t Let Me Go”, “Shepherd” and “Midwest Magic”. As a fan of stripped down renditions of songs, I really enjoy listening to these in addition to the regular versions of them.

I love the approach to songwriting that John Tibbs takes as he uses strong lyrical imagery allowing listeners to see the songs play out adding an extra element to the musical experience. Though just an EP, the messages within Heartland speak volumes with captivating melodies and strong vocal performances as each track has the potential to strengthen your faith and relationship with Christ.
