While COQUÍ is relatively new to the Christian music scene, this talented artist honed his skills working in other genres over the past several years. Thanks to Dream Label Group, we were able to ask COQUÍ to share some thoughts on the new single and what has helped shape his sound.

TCE: What was the inspiration for “Today”?

COQUÍ: The inspiration behind this song really sprang from a place of gratitude, a simple perspective that kept showing up in my life right when I needed it most. It lifted me out of a dark, negative headspace that had clouded my everyday outlook. I poured that sense of thankfulness into my music, hoping to share with others how transformative it can be to surrender those heavy feelings to the Lord.

TCE: How do you feel your career experiences in the music industry and influences thus far reflects in your music?

COQUÍ: My journey through the secular music scene has definitely shaped my sound and production style. I’ve always been drawn to the unique vibes of underground indie and alternative bands that I’ve stumbled upon over the years. Honestly, I’ve never really tuned into Contemporary Christian music much, so I’m a bit out of the loop with that genre. Some might say that’s a good thing. I honestly don’t really think about it much.

When it comes to my lyrics, they’re deeply influenced by the Bible, the sermons I’ve heard, and my personal experiences in recent years. My goal isn’t just to create music for Christians; I aim to reach anyone seeking healing and guidance. I hope my tracks resonate with those who love the sound of secular music but are looking for lyrics that steer clear of worldly themes.

TCE: What kind of impact do you hope “Today” will have in listeners?

COQUÍ: I really hope this song strikes a chord with anyone searching for a fresh start and shines some light into their lives. It’s all about navigating through the shadows of worry and doubt by embracing faith and patience. At it’s heart, the song encourages us to let go and trust in something greater than ourselves (Jesus Christ) to lead the way.
