For nearly three decades, Sevendust has stood as a titan of the hard rock landscape, defined by a sonic architecture that is as brutal as it is beautiful. Their impact is so far-reaching that they have become a cornerstone influence for the Christian rock market, with lead guitarist Clint Lowery serving as a “guitar hero” to a generation of faith-based musicians. My own history with the band dates back to seeing their infectious ferocity live for the first time in 1999 and many times over the years after. But after giving my life to Christ in 2003, I largely stepped away from the mainstream scene—until now.

When I sat down to speak with Clint following his own decision to follow Jesus, I began to see their music through a new lens. Their milestone 15th record, One, delivers the high-energy “artillery” fans expect, but it is the message within this new batch of songs that truly demands attention. I am excited to share this feature, highlighting a song that unexpectedly took me to the Throne: a powerful anthem of restoration titled “Construct”.

For nearly three decades, the name Sevendust has been synonymous with the grit and grind of mainstream hard rock. Since their self-titled debut in 1997, the Atlanta-based quintet has earned a reputation for aggressive riffs and an unrelenting touring schedule. But for those who listen closely to the soaring vocals of frontman Lajon “LJ” Witherspoon, the melodic “six-stringery” of guitarists John Connolly and Clint Lowery, Morgan Rose’s indelible and pounding percussion, and Vinnie Hornsby’s thumping, melodic bass lines, there has always been a deeper spirit—a yearning for light within the darkness.

On their latest project, their 15th studio album titled One (streeting May 1st from Napalm Records), that yearning has finally found its source. The new song “Construct” serves as a powerful anthem of faith, proving that the most profound messages of hope often come from the places we least expect.

The Architect of Change: Clint Lowery’s Journey

The spiritual weight of “Construct” is no accident. It was penned by lead guitarist Clint Lowery, whose personal life underwent a radical transformation in 2024. After years of navigating rock stardom while wrestling with the “spiritual hollowness” of the road, Lowery reached a breaking point.

In our conversation on the Kingdom Builder Podcast back in November—conducted while Clint was actually in the studio recording the new record—he was incredibly candid about his journey from “rock bottom” to finding Christ. It was a unique experience to hear, in real-time, how his faith was directly influencing the sessions for One. Clint described a terrifying neurological health scare that stripped away his self-reliance. “I was brought down to a place of complete darkness and hopelessness,” he shared. “God put me in a position where I had to rely on Him and Him alone.”

One of the most profound shifts in Clint’s walk has been understanding the nature of grace. He admitted that when he first got saved, he thought he needed to “do” things to earn his way. “I thought it was works… let me go find charity work,” he told me. “But I’m humbly learning that it’s not about the works I could do; it was always about just me giving my heart over to Him.”

Analyzing “Construct”: A Modern Psalm

“Construct” feels less like a typical radio hit and more like a raw, vertical cry for help. The lyrics mirror the biblical concept of being “buried” with Christ to be raised in newness of life. Clint shared with me that the track was heavily influenced by Malachi 3:3, which states:

“He will sit like a refiner of silver, burning away the dross. He will purify the Levites, refining them like gold and silver, so that they may once again offer acceptable sacrifices to the Lord.” (NLT)

“Construct was inspired by a true need for God,” Clint explains. “That life and this world, the suffering, the difficult seasons, the trauma, none of it can overtake our spirit if we surrender and trust Him. The verses focus on the hard times—Malachi 3:3 inspired. Where we are tested through trials, but He sits with us through the process.”

This leads into a chorus that functions as a raw, worshipful plea: “You’re all I need / This life tries to bury me / Now forever gone / Those scars we cover up / So change me please / Be the light of the story / Death into glory Lord / I know I’m not enough.”

Bridging the Gap: A Legacy of Influence

While Sevendust remains a mainstream act, their “DNA” has long been intertwined with faith. Both Lowery and Witherspoon grew up in the church, and that upbringing has flavored their music with a sense of resilience and unity.

This influence is evident when looking at the Christian rock landscape. Scores of faith-based artists, including Pillar, Disciple, RED, and Decyfer Down, have cited Sevendust as a primary musical influence. More recently, Lowery collaborated with the up-and-coming Christian group Ignescent on their single “Chariots of Fire,” further bridging the gap between the two worlds.

A Mission of Unity

Throughout their career, Sevendust has functioned more like a family than a business. Backed by the thunderous percussion of Morgan Rose and the thumping bass lines of Vinnie Hornsby, the band has always aimed to provide a “therapeutic” outlet for their fans.

For the conservative Christian listener who might be wary of the “aggressive” label, “Construct” offers a point of entry. It is a song about the universal human struggle: the feeling of being worn down by the world and the miraculous freedom found when we stop running. As Lowery noted in our talk, the byproduct of this newfound grace is a natural desire to do good and love others. “I am humbly learning the difference… it’s not about the works I could do, it was always about just me giving my heart over to Him.” (Listen at the 10:37 mark)

Clint was careful to note during our chat that although he had found Jesus in his own life, Sevendust was “not turning into a Christian band.” However, he expressed that his fellow bandmates and brothers shared a desire to implement that newfound faith into the new music. This creative shift has resulted in a notable milestone: this is the first Sevendust record in quite a while not to be stamped with a Parental Advisory label. It serves as proof that the band can still shell out the hard rock artillery of days past—music that is just as heavy—while providing a new take and deeper meaning through the lyrics.

As a fan of Sevendust from the very beginning, I am proud of Clint’s walk with Jesus and how that faith has been an underlying inspiration on this new record. It is remarkable to see where they have gone from their self-titled debut in 1997 to the work they’ve put out on One.

Beyond “Construct,” there are several standout tracks on this record that people should check out, specifically “One”, “We Won”, “Unbreakable” & “Misdirection”. These are all stellar tracks featuring the Sevendust sound that we’ve come to love and headbang to over the past 30 years, but with even deeper lyrics reflecting the important things in life—reminding us that when we work together as “one,” we truly can accomplish more.

In a broken world, “Construct” and the entirety of One serve as a reminder that the Lord can use any vessel – even a highly influential mainstream band – to deliver a message of restoration. Sevendust may not be a “Christian band” by industry standards, but in this new project, they have provided a soundtrack for anyone looking to turn their own “death into glory.”

“CONSTRUCT” LYRICS

Verse 1:

Burnt broken down watch them bleed

See the world become the lost

The slaves the road into the darkness

Here it comes don’t run now

Love wins somehow

Chorus:

You’re all I need

This life tries to bury me

Now forever gone

Those scars we cover up

So change me please

Be the light of the story

Death into glory Lord

I know I’m not enough

Verse 2:

Worn down till the pain sets me free

I gotta feel that precious suffering

Hopeless the path that heals the broken

Chorus:

You’re all I need

This life tries to bury me

Now forever gone

Those scars we cover up

So change me please

Be the light of the story

Death into glory Lord

I know I’m not enough

Bridge:

So if you can find your light

Remind ourselves

It’s not over not over

It’s now your time to shine

Don’t let your heart stay silent

Don’t let your mind break down

I want to feel the fight in me arrive yeah

Chorus:

You’re all I need

This life tries to bury me

Now forever gone

Those scars we cover up

So change me please

Be the light of the story

Death into glory Lord

I know I’m not enough
