The Amalie Arena in Tampa crackled with anticipation last night as the TobyMac Hits Deep Tour arrived, bringing with it a potent mix of music, faith, and community. More than just a concert, the evening felt like a shared celebration, resonating deeply with the diverse crowd. From die-hard TobyMac fans to those exploring their faith, the night offered something for everyone.
The show cleverly utilized two stages: a smaller, secondary stage connected to the main platform. This allowed for a dynamic flow throughout the night, showcasing a variety of artists while set changes occurred on the larger stage. The evening began with Ryan Stevenson on the smaller stage, his soulful vocals creating an intimate connection with the audience. He was followed by Crowder, who brought his unique blend of folk, electronic, and worship music to the main stage, energizing the arena. Then, Terrian returned to the smaller stage, showcasing her powerful voice and rising star power. CAIN, the sibling trio, took over the main stage next, their infectious energy and popular songs engaging the crowd in a lively sing-along.
Mid-show, a dedicated segment highlighted the work of World Vision, the Christian humanitarian organization. This presentation reminded everyone of the importance of giving back and supporting those in need.
After a brief intermission, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived: TobyMac took the stage. His set was a testament to his enduring career and his deep connection with his fans. He masterfully wove together hits from his early solo days, showcasing the evolution of his sound, with newer tracks that proved his continued relevance. The setlist was a delight for longtime fans, while also offering plenty for newer listeners to enjoy. TobyMac even surprised the crowd with a few unexpected songs, making the night even more special.
A particular highlight was a fun challenge presented to TobyMac and his band, Diverse City. Without revealing too much (you’ll have to experience it for yourself!), this unexpected element injected an extra dose of excitement and friendly competition into the already high-energy atmosphere. It was a clever way to showcase the band’s talent and create a sense of shared experience.
Beyond the music, the night held a deeper significance. TobyMac’s vulnerability in sharing about the passing of his firstborn son, Truett, added a layer of raw emotion to the evening. His willingness to be so open and honest resonated deeply with the audience, demonstrating the power of faith and resilience.
For my family, the concert was particularly impactful. Witnessing my daughter’s reaction to the music as she explores her own faith was a truly special moment. The way the music touched her made the evening more than just a concert; it was a shared spiritual experience.
The TobyMac Hits Deep Tour in Tampa was more than just a concert; it was an experience. It was a night of powerful music, shared faith, and family connection. From the diverse lineup—Ryan Stevenson, Crowder, Terrian, CAIN, and TobyMac—to the innovative use of the two stages and TobyMac’s engaging performance, every aspect of the evening was thoughtfully crafted. The show offered excellent value and was well worth the time. Overall, I give the Tampa stop of the Hits Deep Tour a 4.7 out of 5 stars. It’s an event that will stay with our family for a long time, and one I highly recommend to anyone looking for an uplifting and inspiring night of music.
