When earthly fathers fall short or aren’t present at all, it can be hard or seemingly impossible to recognize God as a loving, caring, provider as our Heavenly Father. Being taught that God is all-powerful, King of Kings and the ultimate judge – while all is true – in addition to not having the presence of a father on earth may also make us feel like God is distant and potentially hinder the growth of our relationship with Him. Others may never even be presented with the message of a Creator who thought of each and every one of us before we were born and desires to draw near in our darkest times and celebrate our joys.
Following the 2021 Show Me The Father film geared towards men and exploring different father-son relationships, in the new Kendrick Brothers documentary film He Calls Me Daughter, we see the stories of several women who grew up with various, difficult father-daughter relationships with some strained, some suffering abuse and others dealing with absent fathers all together. Featured in this documentary are comedian and author Chonda Pierce, president and owner of In-N-Out Lynsi Snyder, actress and producer BJ Arnett and more as they share their experiences and how God revealed Himself to them within the circumstances they were facing.
I found myself relating to many of the emotions and opinions expressed throughout the documentary as it’s been challenging at times – and still can be – to fully embrace and recognize God as a Father having grown up without the presence of an earthly father showing me what that looks like firsthand. Hearing stories like those featured in He Calls Me Daughter and through conversations with others in similar situations and how they’ve seen God show up is always encouraging and has helped me in my relationship with God over the years.
Films like Show Me The Father and now He Calls Me Daughter, along with the corresponding He Calls Me Daughter study curriculum available on the official website linked below, are important to have available as both women and men may be seeking to fill an internal void and answer questions they have about their value in the eyes of their Heavenly Father.
