Season 2 of The Rings of Power continues the epic, creative telling of the creatures, races and places in Middle-earth and beyond in a setting thousands of years before the events of the beloved The Lord of the Rings stories happened. Throughout season 1 and now in season 2, we are taken on an imaginative journey following Galadriel, Elrond, Durin among other familiar Tolkien characters as the Prime Video series explores the origin stories of how their legacies took shape.
While we see some familiar faces and places, there’s also new ones to discover as well as new adventures to be had as some set out to learn their true destiny, others band together to fight against the evil trying to overtake them. Twists and turns make for exciting and sometimes heartbreaking moments that take you on the rollercoaster ride that many The Lord of the Rings fans are accustomed to.
I personally enjoyed seeing the backstories unfold and the different character interactions. The cinematography and visual effects immerses viewers in the landscapes, intense battles and emotions depicted on screen. To me, it’s always interesting to see a new take on a classic that can expand on what we already know. While there have been mixed reviews amongst Tolkien fans, as someone who just enjoys a good fantasy story, my opinion is this is a series worth watching and one I look forward to rewatching in the future to catch bits and pieces that I missed. One of my favorite quotes from an episode I feel captures the overall theme of The Rings of Power series thus far – “It is not strength that overcomes darkness, but light.”
