Lizzie Morgan releases her first album, Not My Will: a promising, heartfelt debut as a solo Christian artist. The standouts of her artistry are her powerful voice and lyrics that connect those who listen to Jesus and her own personal story.
“Let the Alabaster Break,” early released back in May, offers imagery and a bible story not often told through music. Mary of Bethany, who often sat at the feet of Jesus to learn and listen, brought an alabaster jar of her most expensive perfume, broke it, and poured it over him. Just as Mary brought her best as an offering, Lizzie’s song calls us not just to worship and glorify God, but to give Him our best as we do it. As Christians in the modern, busy world, it’s easy for us to fall into a cycle of meaningless habit, going to Church on Sunday and listening to the sermon with half an ear and worshipping with half our heart. God both deserves and demands more from us, and Lizzie brings us back to the whole-hearted worship and praise we should give through her song. Her powerful, soulful voice is so moving you can’t help but raise your hands to the heavens as you worship along.
This author’s favorite of the album is “Unlearning.” Lizzie’s love for God can be heard and felt through the lyrics and delicate melody. While it’s obviously a personal reflection of her own journey in getting to know God’s love, everyone can connect to the same story. As finite, fallen humans, it’s hard to understand the true mercy and love of God, that God could love and accept such imperfect creations. We all go through the same journey, from misunderstanding the relationship He wants with us to finally comprehending there’s nothing we can do to earn His love more than to accept His grace, mercy, and the gift of His only son. We have all been the prodigal son, and no earthly father could have a greater love for us than God the Father who waits with open arms.
The rest of the album does not disappoint, with Biblical and poignant lyrics featuring other artists and collaborators. Lizzie’s experience in worship ministry shines through as this album and the songs it contains help us know God as He wants to be known and how to worship and praise with the heart and passion that’s required.
