It can be hard these days to find good books for children based on Christian faith and morals, but Sparrows is one of them! Written by Christian singer/songwriter Jason Gray and Jes Woller, and based on the lyrics of Jason’s song of the same title, this children’s book offers some great Biblical lessons on worry and giving worry over to God through the story of Ellie.

Ellie is a young girl in school with a disability: she stutters. Her life has revolved around her anxiety and worry over being put into situations where she stutters in front of her classmates and the bullying that comes with it. So she frets and worries all day, focusing inward on herself and praying to God about her sorrows over her disability. While we can all understand and sympathize with this little girl, as Christians, we know that God wants us to give our worries to Him and to push through our own troubles so we can love and help those around us who need us more. This can be a hard concept to teach a child, but this book puts it into an enjoyable story they can understand.

Ellie goes to church and hears her pastor speak about Matthew 10:29-31. In this scripture, Jesus points his followers to the sparrows and how God cares and provides for them, so why wouldn’t he also care and provide for us, who He loves and holds most dear? The sparrows know they will be provided for, so don’t spend their days worrying. This message sends Ellie on a journey, where she discovers that through giving her worries to God, she is able to focus on others around her who need to see God’s love. She becomes less selfish, helps her little brothers, and becomes friends with the girl in school who is mean to her.

For parents trying to teach God’s love to their children, how to pray, and how to share and show Jesus’ light to those around them, Sparrows is a great way to introduce these concepts. Children will appreciate the illustrations and story of a stuttering, anxious girl turned hero to those around her.
