As I’m listening to these four acoustic tracks from Disciple’s newest compilation album The Best of Disciple, I’m blown away! The way the band slowed these four songs down a bit, some more than others, brings out more of the song. With any acoustic version of a song, it exposes the song more than the album version – it brings out more of the emotion of the song. I was excited that Disciple put some acoustic versions of their songs on this album. It really makes the album stand out more. The intro to one of Disciple’s most popular songs, “Dear X, You Don’t Own Me” really gets me hooked. The acoustic guitar and the strings included in the beginning makes the song more beautiful. Yes, I love the original version of this song, but the way the slowed this one down gives me chills. This song in general is one of my favorites. It’s simply saying that we all have “X’s” that we’re not proud of. Rather they be pain we’re trying to hide or anger that we’re trying to bottle up inside. These “X’s” that we have been holding on, they keep chasing us down and trying to own our lives. Instead, we need to stand up to our troubles. They may bend us, but they won’t break us. In my opinion, this is the best Disciple song yet.
Believe it or not, we all have problems and anxieties that we have inside and that we worry about. That’s what Disciple’s song “Lay My Burdens” talks about. It’s been said that we need to give all our worries and anxieties over to God because He cares for us. We may have people in our life that we trust fully with our problems and we may talk with them about our worries. It’s great to have people like that in our lives, but those people aren’t God. God is our only safe place to lay our worries down at. He’s the only that makes us feel better and the only One who can fix our problems.
“Lay My Burdens” is a beautiful song with a beautiful reminder. This album is literally the best of Disciple’s albums (INO/Fair Trade years) put together. Disciple is one of the most underrated rock bands in the Christian music industry. They are a band that has had many band member changes, but they’re also one that puts the most passion and dedication into their music. I’m not the biggest fan of this band, but with the songs that they picked out for this album, I believe are their best songs yet. So, if you’re a old-school fan of Disciple or a someone who’s never heard of them before, you’ll love this release.
