Beyond Belief Hits All the Right Notes with High-Energy Rock, 80s Nostalgia, and an Inspiring Message of Faith

By Jay Heilman

As a lifelong fan of Christian rock, the music of Petra has served as a foundational soundtrack to my life. Over the decades, I have had the incredible privilege of watching the band in its various iconic eras—experiencing both the unmatched vocal power of Greg X. Volz fronting the Classic Petra lineup and the electrifying energy of John Schlitt leading the official Petra roster. So, back in 2024, when writer/producer Joe Sanders approached me at a Petra 50th Anniversary concert in Florida to tell me about a feature film set in the 1980s built around the music and spirit of Petra, I was instantly intrigued.

After following the project’s journey for the past two years, I was fortunate enough to watch an early screening earlier this year. Going in with high expectations, I can wholeheartedly say I was blown away by what the creative team brought to the screen. Beyond Belief is an authentic, energetic, and deeply moving cinematic experience that delivers on every front.

The Story: Rock Dreams, Grief, and God’s Greater Plan

At the center of Beyond Belief is Andy, portrayed with remarkable charisma, vulnerability, and musical authenticity by rising star Carson Lueders. Following a sudden and devastating personal loss, Andy finds himself at a painful crossroads, channeling his grief and ambition into chasing his ultimate dream: becoming a bona fide rock star. Armed with raw talent and relentless drive, he sets out to make his mark on the world.

However, as Andy soon discovers—and as so many of us experience in our own journeys—our plans rarely align perfectly with God’s plans. What begins as a quest for stage lights, fame, and personal validation evolves into a profound story of surrender, healing, and purpose. As Andy navigates the highs and lows of the music industry and the weight of his past, he is confronted with the reality that true fulfillment isn’t found in the applause of the crowd, but in trusting where God leads when everything else falls apart.

1980’s Nostalgia Done Right

For anyone who grew up during the golden era of big riffs, neon aesthetics, and arena rock, Beyond Belief is an absolute blast of nostalgia. Having grown up as a child of the 1980s, watching this film was a joyful trip down memory lane. The production design, wardrobe, retro nods, and overall vibe capture the charm and vibrant spirit of the era without ever feeling campy or forced.

And then, of course, there is the music. Petra’s iconic, hard-hitting catalog serves as the heartbeat of the movie, perfectly woven into the narrative to elevate the emotion, drive the tension, and deliver electrifying musical sequences that will have fans tapping their feet and singing along in their seats.

A Powerhouse Ensemble Cast

Beyond Lueders’ commanding lead role, the film is elevated by a stellar supporting ensemble that gives the world its gritty, authentic pulse. Veteran screen presences James C. Burns and Debby Gerber bring immense gravitas and emotional grounding to the story, serving as steady anchors amidst Andy’s turbulent rock-and-roll journey.

The younger cast delivers just as much spark and camaraderie. Libby Smallbone brings a captivating warmth and sincerity to the screen, while Ryan Barnes, Sophie Bolen, Sam Coffelt, and Oscar Mandky round out the crew with effortless chemistry, sharp banter, and raw energy. Whether locking in during high-stakes musical sequences or navigating the emotional friction off-stage, this talented ensemble makes the band dynamics and 80s rock subculture feel completely alive and believable.

Exclusive Interview: A Conversation with Carson Lueders

In anticipation of the film’s nationwide theatrical debut, I had the pleasure of sitting down with lead actor Carson Lueders to talk about his journey stepping into Andy’s shoes, diving into Petra’s legendary discography, and the advice he received on-set from rock icons John Schlitt and Bob Hartman.
