For many of us, Pillar wasn’t just another band on the radio; they were the gateway to a life-changing world of Christian rock. My personal connection to the band was cemented from the very beginning. I remember being instantly hooked the moment I heard “Further From Myself” and the title track from their 2002 breakout, Fireproof. Those songs didn’t just provide a soundtrack to my early walk with Christ; they made Pillar one of my all-time favorite bands.
While the group officially formed in 1998 as a group of college kids from Hays, Kansas, they truly began gaining massive traction with that Fireproof era. By the time their 2004 record Where Do We Go From Here (my personal favorite Pillar record) blew up, they had, in my opinion, cemented their status as elite heavyweights on the scene. As someone who has followed them since 2003 and seen them live many times over the years, watching this documentary feels like a powerful, much-needed homecoming.
A Raw and Honest Journey
Beyond the Frontline is far more than a simple highlight reel. It is a raw, honest, and at times deeply emotional look back at the band’s storied history.
-
The Vision: The film is the brainchild of Kaden Wittig, an aspiring young filmmaker and the son of bassist Michael “Kalel” Wittig.
-
Unique Perspective: Having literally grown up on the road with the band, Kaden captures the journey of those college kids from Hays with a unique, behind-the-scenes lens.
-
The Story Untold: The documentary offers an insider’s POV of the course God has had Rob Beckley, Michael “Kalel” Wittig, Noah Henson, and Lester Estelle Jr. on since the early 2000’s.
-
The Core Reunion: A major highlight is the incredible honesty from the guys and the pure excitement of seeing the core lineup playing together for the first time since 2008.
The Power of the Pillar Army
The documentary beautifully illustrates the profound impact Pillar has had on its listeners. Through heartfelt testimonies, the film shows how the band’s ministry and music have bolstered the faith of fans across the globe. It’s a testament to the fact that Pillar continues to have a massive impact on music fans today.
While the guys joke about shaking off some “rust,” the electrifying footage from their sold-out 2024 hometown show in Tulsa, OK, proves they haven’t lost a single step. Interestingly, that 2024 show also features a second guitarist in JR Bareis (Love and Death, Spoken). Bareis himself was a Pillar super-fan who was heavily influenced by the band to pick up the guitar as a teen, making his appearance on stage a true full-circle moment for the Pillar legacy.
