Back in 2003, a small church in Albany, Georgia, took a step of faith that would quietly reshape modern faith-based cinema. Operating on a shoestring budget of just $20,000 provided by Sherwood Baptist Church, brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick set out with home video equipment and volunteer church members to film Flywheel. It was rough around the edges, but the raw honesty of its spiritual core resonated deeply with viewers, ultimately launching one of the most prolific creative partnerships in modern Christian cinema (Facing the Giants, Fireproof, War Room, The Forge).
Twenty-three years later, the story that started it all has returned—reimagined, elevated, and set loose on an international stage.
Flywheel: Ignition of the Soul arrives in U.S. theaters on October 16th, and I am thrilled to report that this Brazilian reimagining does far more than honor its predecessor—it sets the screen ablaze.
The Story: A Timeless Crisis of Conscience
Like the 2003 original, this modern retelling stays true to the foundational narrative that made audiences fall in love with the story over two decades ago:
Official Synopsis:
Follows Noah Silva, a used-car salesman whose unethical approach to business unravels at home and work. After wake-up calls, he begins a difficult journey to restore his integrity and win back his wife and son.
Noah Silva (played with remarkable charisma and emotional range by Mario Bregieira) is a man addicted to the hustle. In his eyes, bending the truth and padding the invoices isn’t theft—it’s just good business. But cutting moral corners has a way of eroding everything of genuine value. When his duplicity begins poisoning his marriage and driving a wedge between him and his son, Noah is confronted with a series of unmistakable wake-up calls. What follows is a costly, authentic, and deeply moving road toward true repentance and redemption.
From Albany to Rio: A Vibrant New Setting
The most striking shift in Flywheel: Ignition of the Soul is its setting. Transporting the plot from small-town Georgia to the sun-soaked streets, winding avenues, and bustling energy of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil breathes fresh life into every frame.
The project was born following the massive success of the Kendrick Brothers’ film The Forge, which opened at #1 at the Brazilian box office. While touring Brazil, the Kendricks connected with local filmmakers and pastors who yearned to produce top-tier, homegrown faith films. The result is an authentic, all-Brazilian cast and crew helmed by director Alessandro Barros, working alongside producers Mark Miller, Daniel Friesen, Wiltonauar Moura, and executive producers Ygor Siqueira, Jim McBride, and the Kendricks.
Having been fortunate enough to attend an early screening in the film’s original Portuguese audio with English subtitles, the cultural authenticity stood out immediately. The vibrant backdrop of Rio doesn’t merely serve as scenery; it enriches the stakes, the family dynamics, and the community impact of Noah’s radical transformation. Keep your eyes peeled, too—original creator Alex Kendrick makes a special on-screen appearance, bringing the journey full circle.
Everything the Original Dreamed of Being
The 2003 Flywheel proved that a compelling message could overcome technical limitations. Flywheel: Ignition of the Soul proves what happens when that exact same heart is paired with elite filmmaking craft.
Everything the Kendricks simply did not have the resources or budget to achieve 23 years ago shines through with polish here:
-
Cinematography & Direction: Alessandro Barros captures Rio with cinematic warmth, sharp pacing, and expressive camera work that feels alive.
-
Performances: Mario Bregieira brings magnetic depth to Noah, supported by grounded, heartfelt turns from Pérola Faria, Gui Tavares, Felipe Folgosi, Adriano Canindé, and Elizeu Rodrigues.
-
Emotional Resonance: When Noah gets on his knees to surrender his dishonest ambitions, the scene hits with the same gut-wrenching sincerity that moved viewers twenty years ago—now amplified by a moving, fully orchestrated score.
In Theaters Nationwide October 16th: Two Ways to Watch
AFFIRM Films is bringing Flywheel: Ignition of the Soul to theaters across the country starting October 16th. Audiences will have the choice to experience the film in two formats:
-
Original Portuguese with English Subtitles (my personal recommendation for experiencing the raw emotional nuance of the Brazilian cast).
-
English Dubbed Version, featuring voice performances from Brett Varvel (Disciples in the Moonlight), Masey McLain (The Baxters), Todd Terry (Vindication), and Lara Silva (The Chosen).
