It’s a noisy world. The news shouts at us about things that we need to know and care about. Our families, friends, and co-workers compete for our attention. The storms of our personal circumstances drown out the truth about ourselves and the world. Above it all rises the melody of an unshakeable hope. Underneath it all whispers the assurance of God’s promises. Danny Gokey’s Sound of Heaven dials down the volume on the things of Earth for a moment so we can hear something worth listening to.
“Sound of Heaven” begins with a splash of enthusiasm, encouraging us to lay down our burdens and exchange them for the pure joy of participating in the praise and worship of God. We can gratefully maintain a Christ-centered perspective, no matter what the world outside our window looks like.
The desire to model our lives after Christ is the subject of “wannabe”. A word that is usually used to describe someone who pursues a shallow image of perfection instead expresses a sincere pursuit of Christlikeness that rejects the human-centered view of perfection.
“I Got You” reminds us that when we remain in Christ, we can endure any circumstance. We are unmoved by the storms and tremors that would otherwise rattle us. Whatever else we may have or lack, we have Jesus in our corner, and He is more than enough.
Next, Gokey proclaims that Jesus is “Still On The Throne”. We have no reason to fear the darkness because He has everything under control. Jesus is always fighting our battles. When everything is shaken (and it will be), we hold on to Him.
“Only For A Moment” is an assurance that our troubles are temporary. God allows trials for our good and His glory. If we are patient and open to what He’s doing, we can endure to the end and come out stronger. We mustn’t despair because He is faithful.
Blending English and Spanish lyrics, “Todo El Mundo” is a fun party song that welcomes everybody to come and celebrate God together, wherever they come from. We’re all on the same side of the fight, and that’s all that matters.
“Open Up The Gates” invites the presence of Christ to establish His kingdom in our midst. When we worship Him with our praises, we declare a willingness to be changed and used to accomplish His work on the earth.
In “Can’t Help But Worship”, Gokey and Naomi Raine pool their talents for a sincere declaration of adoration. God’s glory makes it nigh unto impossible for believers to do anything less or want anything more than to worship Him.
“God’s Not” encourages us to take comfort in the chaotic seasons of our lives because we trust in an unchanging God. He is not worried, He is warring on our behalf. Our story hasn’t concluded yet, so we can ignore all indications to the contrary.
“Makeup” is a powerful message entreating us to see past the lies that are peddled to us by Satan, no matter how pretty they appear on the outside. We have an obligation to speak and live the truth, no matter the cost. Our war is not against each other, but the darkness.
Finally, Gokey teams up with Evan Craft for “Lean On Me”, offering love, understanding and support to people who are hurting. If you really love someone, you’re not afraid to walk through their pain with them. When another member of the body of Christ is suffering, we all suffer.
We who believe and trust in the promises of God have the assurance that whatever heaven is like, it will be glorious. Christ is the focus of our worship and the source of our hope. Danny Gokey’s Sound of Heaven is a preview of greater things to come. Melodies and messages of hope, strength, and truth saturate the album, soaking through the cracks in our armor to touch our souls.
