STRYPER ‘When We Were Kings’

The legendary Christian metal band, Stryper, is back with their 12th studio album, When We Were Kings, set for release on September 13, 2024. This album comes as the band gears up for their 40th-anniversary tour, making it a significant moment in their long career. Original members Michael Sweet, Robert Sweet, and Oz Fox are still in the lineup, alongside bassist Perry Richardson, and the band remains a powerful force in the Christian metal scene.

When We Were Kings is a blend of Stryper’s classic ‘80s sound with a modern take, offering something for both long-time fans and new listeners. While When We Were Kings maintains the heavy, melodic approach of their last few albums, it also includes fresh ideas. Fans of the band’s early hits will enjoy this album, but it isn’t just a nostalgic trip—this new music also explores deeper themes and carries a more complex musical arrangement, showing that Stryper is not afraid to push their creative boundaries.

The album unfolds with a powerful opener, “End of Days,” driven by a heavy riff and sets a dramatic tone. The intensity continues with “Unforgivable,” a track that delves into the topics of hope of redemption. The title track, “When We Were Kings,” serves as an anthem, reflecting on the band’s grand past while fully embracing their present. Another stand out song is “Betrayed by Love”, as it shifts the mood with exploring themes of love and loss. For fans of intricate guitar work, “Trinity,” adds layers of complexity to the record. The album also features “Grateful,” a pop-rock-infused song that is reminiscent of the band’s 80s hits and expresses heartfelt gratitude to their fans.
