Finding Faith in the Unknown: Why Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ is a Masterpiece of Wonder

As a longtime fan of Steven Spielberg, walking into his newest sci-fi thriller, Disclosure Day, carried a heavy sense of anticipation. We all know his legendary history with the skies—the awe-inspiring mystery of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the pure, emotional heartbeat of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. For decades, Spielberg has shaped how we imagine life beyond our world. Yet, Disclosure Day feels like something entirely new. Rather than just a repetition of past themes, his earlier forays into alien life seem to beautifully culminate into what this film is presenting. It is a thrilling, propulsive narrative that grips you from the start, questioning the unknown in a way that only Spielberg can.

The premise of the film pulls you into a high-stakes world where evidence of non-human intelligence has been actively hidden from humanity for decades. When whistleblowers attempt to bring the truth to light, it sets off a riveting race against time. The urgency of the narrative is anchor-dropped by an absolute powerhouse of an ensemble. We get genuinely riveting, top-tier performances from Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Josh O’Connor, Wyatt Russell, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. Every single one of them brings a grounded, human weight to a massive, larger-of-life concept. Elevating the tension and wonder is a stellar, breathtaking score by the legendary composer and longtime Spielberg collaborator, John Williams. It is mind-blowing to realize he is still shining so brightly and delivering such evocative, masterful music even at 94 years old!

But beneath the breathless pacing, the incredible acting, and the sleek, paranoid thriller elements, the story harbors a deeply profound soul. What struck me most—especially as a Christian—was how the film handles the concept of faith. The trailers heavily promote the extraterrestrial elements, but the actual narrative inserts the faith element of God, and how He fits into the grand picture, with a remarkably careful touch.

My TCE colleague Mike Laxton accompanied me to the screening of the film and when it comes to the faith aspect of the film he says “One of the most compelling aspects of Disclosure Day is the way it addresses faith, particularly from a Christian perspective. For many believers, the idea of extraterrestrial life can feel like a major theological roadblock, but the film handles that tension with clarity and care. Rather than dismissing faith, it acknowledges the question and creates space for thoughtful reflection. That element was especially well done.” I very much agree and thought that Spielberg, whom is of the Jewish faith himself, made an effort to approach this in the way he did.

For me, the movie doesn’t challenge or deny the existence of God in the big picture of things. Instead, it expands the horizon, gently asking us to ponder the possibility of “other beings” out there who might just serve the same Creator.

Experiencing this story didn’t change the way I look at my own faith. While I certainly don’t know for sure if there are aliens or other life forms inhabiting the stars, it’s a question I have genuinely pondered over the years. If God created such a vast, billions-of-light-years-wide universe, did He really only put life as we know it on one solitary planet? It is a legitimate, humbling question that I’ve heard echo through church halls for years—and ultimately, who knows but God?

Spielberg bridges that gap between science fiction and deep spiritual reflection flawlessly, wrapping the entire philosophical dilemma inside an absolute powerhouse of an entertainment vehicle.

If you are looking for a blockbuster that entertains you completely while still leaving you with something deeply meaningful to talk about on the drive home, this is it. I really enjoyed the film and would highly encourage folks to go check it out in theaters. It truly is a good one.

Disclosure Day is a dramatic and dazzling film with a story that raises questions in a way only Spielberg can. Phenomenal!

Parental Advisory:

For parents wondering if Disclosure Day is suitable for a family movie night, Steven Spielberg stays well within his historical wheelhouse here. If you are familiar with his past sci-fi and action classics, you know he frequently utilizes the PG-13 rating to deliver genuine tension and stakes. That trend continues here.

The film firmly earns its PG-13 rating, primarily due to several intense, frightening science-fiction action sequences and moments of violence that could easily overwhelm younger viewers. On the language front, the dialogue is relatively mild overall but does include one use of the “F” word, a few instances of minor profanity, and the Lord’s name taken in vain once.

The Verdict: While Disclosure Day is a thrilling, thought-provoking ride that will likely fascinate teenagers (ages 12 and older), the sheer intensity of the suspense and sci-fi elements makes it a bit too frightening for younger children.
