Jon Foreman – ‘Shadows EP’

As I got the files for Jon Foreman’s second EP from The Wonderlands collection, I couldn’t help but do a happy dance. Jon never fails me with his songwriting. He writes about the tough things, but always explains them so well and puts them in terms that us fans can relate to. Jon’s second EP Shadows from The Wonderlands collection is good for the soul and easy to listen to.

The first song off the EP “Fake Your Own Death” is one of my all time favorite Jon Foreman songs, ever. “..What would you live like if you could die and be reborn?” That’s the main question in this song. That’s a hard question to answer but a million thoughts are going through my mind as I look at those words. Would you live your life in the moment instead of worrying about the future? Would you not be scared of death and be scared of something else? All of us are scared of death in some way. In this song, Jon says “You can fake your own death and live it like you’ve always been ashamed of living. Fake your own death, and instead of dying, you might come alive.” Instead of being afraid of death, maybe we need to be afraid of the moments we’re missing because of our fear. We need to come alive in the moment while we can. I know life can be terrifying, but if we put our focus on what’s yet to for us, maybe we would come more alive with our lives.

“Your Love is Enough” is so beautiful. When Jon sings about Gods love, it makes my heart smile so big. These type of songs by Jon are my favorite. It gives my soul rest and puts my mind at ease. Jon has said that he writes about things that confuses him, one of those things is God. We know God can be confusing to us sometimes, but when I hear Jon’s songs about The Creator, it makes me feel like I can understand God a little bit more. Jon’s songwriting skills always blow me away and they have been for the past couple years that I’ve known about him and Switchfoot. I’m so proud to be alive during Jon’s thriving music career. Knowing that I’m getting to listen and see this legend of a man live his dream through his music, makes me so happy to be alive.
